The Mining and Materials Processing Institute of Japan (MMIJ)

 

Objectives


 

The MMIJ’s objective is to contribute to the advancement of industry and academic research through improvements in the science and technology of resources and materials. The Institute’s efforts include research, collecting and disseminating information, education, and human resources development  related to resources and materials.

Scope of Activities


 

The scope of MMIJ’s activities cover non-ferrous metals, coal, industrial minerals and materials (including limestone and crushed stone), the generation and use of recyclable and recycled materials, the refining of non-ferrous metals, and various other activities in these fields. The Institute’s primary focus is on environmental protection but activities also include peripheral and downstream processes in materials-related fields. These peripheral activities include marine resources, technologies for underground use, and earth and resources fields such as geothermal energy, new metals, rare metals, high-purity materials, ceramics, new compounds, composite materials, and functional materials. These activates are conducted from a broad perspective that includes social systems.

History


 

February 28, 1885: The Japan Mining Industry Association is established.
Japan Mining Industry Association Regulations
Article 1:
“The Association shall study the following matters with the main purport of seeking exclusively to further the progress and improvement of the mining industry and exchange knowledge on the subject of mining.
1.Mining
2.Metallurgy
3.Geology
4.Minerals and rocks
May 15, 1900: The Japan Mining Industry Association is approved as an incorporated association by the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce.
October 11, 1968: The Japan Mining Industry Association, Hokkaido Mining Association, Tohoku Mining Association, and Kyushu Mining Association are amalgamated.
November 1984: The Association’s Headquarters are relocated to the Nogizaka Building (Akasaka 9-chome) from the Japan Mining Industry Association building (Ginza 8-chome).
June 22, 1988: The Association’s name is changed to The Mining and Materials Processing Institute of Japan.
June 28, 2011: The Institute’s incorporation as a General Association is approved
July 1, 2011: The Mining and Materials Processing Institute of Japan (MMIJ) is established and registered.
