The Journal of MMIJ is an open access journal published online by The Mining and Materials Processing Institute of Japan (hereafter referred to as the “MMIJ”) in English and Japanese, 12 times a year.
The Journal of MMIJ publishes papers in the following fields:

(1) Traditional fields
– Mineral resources fields (non-ferrous metals, coal, limestone, crushed stone, etc.)
– Development and utilization of recyclable resources
– Smelting and refining of non-ferrous metals
– Environmental conservation in these fields
(2) Peripheral and downstream fields of the traditional fields
– Earth and resources fields (marine resources, underground utilization technology, geothermal heat, etc.)
– Processing and material fields (new metals, rare metals, high-purity materials, ceramics, new compounds,
composite materials      functional materials, etc.)
– Environmental and recycling fields from a broad perspective (including social systems)

The Journal of MMIJ publishes four types of papers: reviews, current opinions, original papers, technical reports. Authors must disclose the source of published data or material (e.g. public repositories or commercial databases), and include the accession numbers or company details in the manuscript, as necessary.

Authors may make their own data or material accessible by publishing it as supplementary material or by linking the manuscript to public databases or community-recognized repositories.

3-8. Author competing interests and conflicts of interest

If any conflict of interest exists, it must be stated in the cover letter and the Conflict of Interest section of the manuscript. The statement will be published as part of the paper. If no conflict of interest is declared, it shall be deemed as a statement that the authors have nothing to disclose.

3-9. Confidentiality

4-1. Journal Committee

The Journal Committee consists of the following members:

Chairperson of the Journal Committee: One person

Vice Chairperson of the Journal Committee: Two persons or less, as necessary

Secretary General of the Journal Committee: One person or less, as necessary

Journal Committee members: 6 to 12 persons

The Journal Committee edits the Journal of MMIJ (hereafter referred to as the “Journal”), which is a journal published by the Mining and Materials Processing Institute of Japan.

The Editorial and Publishing Committee, the Journal Committee, and the Newsletter Committee is chaired by the Executive Director in charge of Editorial and Publication. The Chairperson of the Editorial and Publishing Committee (hereinafter referred to as the “Chairperson”) attends the Council Meeting of the MMIJ to report on the editorial status of the Journal and seek the Council’s opinion on the editing of the Journal.

Only the Chairperson is required to be approved by the Council as a Candidate for Director. The Council’s approval is not required for the vice chairpersons of the Journal (hereinafter referred to as the “Vice Chairpersons”), the secretary general of the Journal (hereinafter referred to as the “Secretary General”), the secretaries of the Journal (hereinafter referred to as the “Secretaries”), and the members of the Journal Committee (hereinafter referred to as the “Committee Members”).

The editorial work of the Journal is carried out under the responsibility of the Chairperson.

The Vice Chairperson of the Journal (hereinafter referred to as the “Vice Chairperson”) and the Secretary General of the Journal (hereinafter referred to as the “Secretary General”) assist the Chairperson in performing the duties and, if the Chairperson has an accident and temporarily becomes unable to perform the duties, the Vice Chairperson and the Secretary General share and perform the predetermined duties according to a predetermined order.

The members of the Journal Committee (hereinafter referred to as the “Committee Members”) assist the duties of the Chairperson, and may also perform some of the editorial duties relegated by the Chairperson.

The Committee Members give the Chairperson advice necessary for editing the Journal.

4-2. Editorial and peer review process

The Journal uses a single blind peer review system.

The receipt, screening, and acceptance of the submitted manuscripts are carried out in the following procedures:

    1. The date of receipt is the date when the manuscript is submitted to the review and screening system of the MMIJ.
    2. Original papers are reviewed by at least two reviewers, and reviews, Current opinions, Technical reports are reviewed by at least one reviewer. The Chairperson appoints the reviewers after deliberation by the Committee.
    3. The Chairperson decides whether to accept or reject the manuscript by referring to the opinions of the reviewers.
    4. The Chairperson may request the authors to revise the manuscript in light of the reviewers’ opinions or the editorial policy of the Journal.
    5. The Chairperson decides on the measures to be taken when there is a conflict of opinion between the reviewers and the authors.
    6. The date of acceptance of the manuscript is the date of the decision to accept the manuscript according to item 3.

The classification of the manuscript may be changed with the consent of the authors.

The Chairperson may request the authors to revise the manuscript. In such cases, the authors must respond to the request, make the necessary revisions, and promptly resubmit the manuscript. If a manuscript is not resubmitted for more than two months after being returned to the authors without a valid reason, the manuscript is deemed to have been withdrawn.

If a Division Committee proposes a special issue, the Chairperson may accept the proposal after consultation with the Division Committee, based on the overall judgment of the editorial status of the Journal. In addition, the Chairperson may relegate part of the duties of editing a special issue of the Division Committee to the Division Committee.

The classification of the manuscript according to the submission rules, the date of receipt and the date of acceptance of the manuscript shall be clearly printed for each manuscript.

Each manuscript submitted to the Journal is subjected to an initial screening by the Chairperson. Manuscripts that do not fit the scope of the Journal or are deemed unsuitable for publication are rejected without peer review. The Chairperson appoints a Committee Member to oversee the review of a manuscript that have passed the initial screening. The Committee Member in charge selects one or two appropriate reviewers to evaluate the manuscript, depending on the manuscript type. The reviewers are selected based on their expertise, reputation, and experience as reviewers. The deadline for submission of a reviewer’s report is generally within three weeks.

Upon receipt of the reviewers’ reports, the Committee Member in charge decides whether the manuscript needs to be revised. Authors must resubmit the requested revised manuscript within two months. Revised manuscripts submitted after this deadline may be treated as new submissions. The Committee Member in charge sends the revised manuscript to the reviewers for re-review, or evaluates the revised manuscript himself/herself to evaluate if the reviewers’ comments are reflected in the revised manuscript. The Committee Member in charge then makes the final decision on whether the manuscript is suitable for publication in the Journal.

The Chairperson serves as an arbitrator, as necessary.

4-3. Reviewer selection, timing and suggestions

Reviewers are selected based on their expertise in the field, research achievements, recommendation by others, and/or previous experience as peer reviewers for the Journal.

In principle, reviewers are selected within one week after the paper is submitted. Reviewers are required to submit their first review report within three weeks of accepting the request for review. If a delay is expected in this schedule, reviewers must notify the Journal Committee as soon as possible.

The selection of peer reviewers is at the sole discretion of the Committee Member in charge.

4-4. Reviewer reports

It is the policy of the Journal to send the reviewers’ comments to the authors in their original form. However, if the reviewers’ comments contain offensive language or confidential information, the Journal Committee reserves the right to edit the reviewer’s comments without consulting the reviewers.

4-5. Acceptance criteria

If a manuscript meets the requirements for publication in the Journal and is judged to make a significant contribution to the MMIJ when published, the Committee Member in charge recommends the manuscript for publication in the Journal.

The requirements for the acceptance of a paper for publication in the Journal are as follows:

    • The content is within the subject area of the Journal’s scope.
    • The content is novel and original.
    • The description of the work is technically rigorous.
    • The matter is of interest to the readers of the Journal.
    • The content is an important discovery in the field.

If a manuscript does not meet the Journal’s requirements for acceptance, the Committee Member in charge may recommend rejection.

4-6. Independence of the Journal Committee

The MMIJ recognizes the full and sole responsibility of the Journal Committee for all editorial decisions in the Journal. The MMIJ will not become involved in the editorial decisions, except in cases where there is a fundamental breakdown in the editorial process.

Editorial decisions are based only on the scientific and technical aspects of the manuscript and are kept completely separate from other interests of the Journal. The author’s ability to pay the publication charges does not influence the acceptance or rejection of the manuscript for publication in the Journal.

4-7. Appeals

Authors may lodge an appeal to the Journal Committee if they believe that an editorial decision has been made in error. Appeals are only considered if the author provides detailed evidence of misunderstanding or error by the reviewers or Committee Members.

Appeals are carefully considered by the Committee Chairperson, who makes the final decision on whether to accept or reject the appeal.

4-8. Confidentiality in peer review

The Journal maintains the confidentiality of unpublished manuscripts. In addition, Committee Members shall comply with the following:

    • Committee Members shall not disclose the identity of a reviewer unless reasonably requested to do so by the reviewer.
    • Committee Members shall not discuss the manuscript or its contents with anyone who is not directly involved in the manuscript or review.
    • Committee Members shall not use data or information from the manuscript for their own research or publications.
    • Committee Members shall not use information obtained during the review process to provide an advantage to themselves or anyone else, or to disadvantage any individual or organization.

4-9. Errata and retraction

The Journal recognizes the importance of maintaining the integrity of the published papers.

If a published paper contains an error, the paper may be corrected through the publication of an erratum. An erratum describes errors that significantly affect the scientific and technical integrity of the publication, the credibility of the authors, or the Journal itself.

Authors who wish to correct a published paper shall send the manuscript to the Journal Committee with details of the error and the corrected contents. In cases where co-authors disagree over a correction, the Chairperson may consult the Journal Committee or external peer reviewers for advice. If an erratum is published, any dissenting co-authors shall be noted in the text.

If a published article contains invalid or unreliable results or conclusions, has been published elsewhere, or has violated codes of conduct (research ethics or publication ethics), the paper will be retracted. Individuals requesting retraction of a paper shall contact the Journal Committee with the details of their concerns. The Chairperson will investigate further and contact the authors of the paper for their response. In cases where co-authors disagree over a retraction, the Chairperson may consult the Journal Committee or external peer reviewers for advice. If a retraction is published, any dissenting co-authors shall be noted in the text.

After the Chairperson makes a final decision that an erratum or a retraction is necessary, it shall be published with the approval of the Council.

Errors in typesetting may be corrected by an erratum or other means if requested by the authors. Errors other than those mentioned above may be disclosed only when the Chairperson approves it.

4-10.  Journal Committee members as authors in the Journal

If a Committee Member including the Chairperson submits a manuscript, he/she shall be excluded from the peer review process for that paper. Within the Journal’s online manuscript submission and tracking system, the Committee Member will be able to see the manuscript as an author but not as a Committee Member, thereby maintaining the confidentiality of peer review.

A manuscript authored by a Committee Member will be peer reviewed and accepted or rejected through the same process as other manuscripts.

4-11. Responding to potential violation of ethics

If there is an allegation of violation of ethics, the Journal will respond to it in accordance with its own policy.

4-12. Reviewer confidentiality

Reviewers shall agree to maintain the confidentiality of unpublished manuscripts at all times, as part of their responsibilities.

By accepting the request to review a manuscript, reviewers shall be deemed to have agreed to comply with the following:

    • Reviewers shall not disclose their role in the review of the manuscript.
    • Reviewers shall not reveal their identity to the authors of the manuscript.
    • Reviewers shall not discuss the manuscript or its contents with anyone who is not directly involved in the review process.
    • Reviewers shall not allow third parties (including postdoctoral fellows and doctoral students) to participate in the peer review process without the prior permission of the Committee Member in charge.
    • Reviewers shall not use data or information from the manuscript in their own work or publications.
    • Reviewers shall not use information obtained from the peer review process to provide an advantage to themselves or anyone else, or to disadvantage any individual or organization.

4-13. Conflict of interest of reviewer

A conflict of interest arises when there are actual, perceived, or potential circumstances that could influence the fair evaluation of a manuscript by the reviewer. Specifically, such circumstances might include having a personal or professional relationship with the author, working on the same or competing topic with the author, having a financial interest in the work or its publication, or having been a co-author of a previous manuscript.

The Committee Members in charge will try to avoid conflicts of interest when appointing reviewers, but they may not always be able to identify potential biases. Reviewers must declare any conflicts of interest to the Committee Members in charge, who will determine the best course of action based on the declaration.

The Journal of MMIJ has been fully open access since 2016 and use a Creative Commons (CC) license. This license allows users to use and reuse the papers published in the Journal free of charge and without prior permission from the publisher or authors. However, when using such work, users are required to clearly state that the work had been published in a compilation published by the MMIJ.

In addition, the commercial use or modified use of such work shall require permission from the MMIJ.

5-1. Copyright and licensing

Authors are required to sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement (CTA) to transfer all copyrights of their papers to the MMIJ. The MMIJ publishes papers under the Creative Commons CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 International License.

[CC BY-NC-ND 4.0]

All articles in the Journal are open access. Authors must choose to use the Creative Commons license CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 (Attribution-NonCommercialNoDerivatives 4.0 International). It should be noted that some funding bodies require that funded papers be published under a specific Creative Commons license. Confirmation with the relevant funding agencies must be done by the authors before submitting the paper.

5-2. Article Processing Charge (APC)

There are many costs associated with publishing the Journal, such as the costs for the servers for the peer review and screening system, manuscript organization, typesetting, and online hosting. Journals that do not charge subscription fees require authors (or their representatives) to pay an Article Processing Charge (APC) to cover these costs.

The Journal charges an APC for all manuscripts except for invited manuscripts. The APC is JPY50,000 for MMIJ members and JPY150,000 for non-members. Authors must pay an overage fee of JPY20,000 per page for manuscripts exceeding 10 pages. Authors of accepted manuscripts will be invoiced for the APC prior to publication. There is no submission fee.

5-3. Waiver policy

If a corresponding author is from a country classified as “Group A” in Research4Life, the Journal will waive the APC. If it is proven that the corresponding author is in financial hardship, the Journal will consider waiving the APC upon application made by the responsible author to the Journal Committee before the submission of the manuscript. Applications made after the peer review process has begun will not be accepted.

The ability of the author to pay the APC does not influence editorial decisions. To avoid any possibility of undue influence, the Committee Members involved in the decision-making process on acceptance of papers are not involved in any deliberation of waivers.

All manuscripts must be submitted via the Journal’s online submission system (ScholarOne: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/mmij). Original or revised manuscript files can be uploaded in PDF or Microsoft Word format, but the final manuscript must be submitted as a Word file. Figures and tables can also be separately submitted in other file formats. For authors having difficulty with submitting the manuscript electronically, the Secretariat of the MMIJ can provide a proxy submission service. Authors who wish to use the proxy submission service shall inform the secretariat of the MMIJ in advance and submit the manuscript file.

If you encounter any problem with online submission, please contact Mikio Kodama, editorial staff of the Journal Committee of MMIJ, who is also the contact person for these Manuscript Submission Rules.

The rules for writing a manuscript, its composition, precautions, etc. are specified in the Appendix “Manuscript Preparation.”
